Pushing what it means to be "green" from organic teas to bio-fuel delivery
Dragon Pearl Tea is not only dedicated to fine organic tea products, but to the greenness and social responsibility of its
business practices as well. The California-based tea importer recently began delivering to retailers with biodiesel fuel truck,
and regularly sponsors local non-profit organizations fostering community support and well-being.
"Biodiesel is far cleaner and better for the environment than the gas or diesel fuel that most trucks use," says Judah Sanders,
CEO of Dragon Pearl Tea. "We will use biodiesel to deliver our tea, and whenever possible, we strive to be environmentally friendly in everything we do."
Dragon Pearl also guarantees their tea to be pesticide-free, a claim larger tea companies generally don't make. From the farms, which use only natural methods of pest control and fertilizer, to the packaging and delivery, Dragon Pearl Tea pays close attention to environmental and pollution issues in business practices as well as in the natural ingredients of the products themselves. Some of the "green" and socially responsible practices of Dragon Pearl Tea include:
- Inspections of the tea farm co-op plantations and packaging facilities
- Anti-chemical practices
- Follow-up lab inspections in the US
- Creating re-usable or recyclable containers
- Using packaging and paper from recycled materials whenever possible
- Distributing and shipping in uncoated, plain brown boxes
- Bio-diesel based fuel for delivery whenever possible
- Pressuring vendors to "go green," and preferring those that do
"If small companies like ours make the effort to be more environmentally friendly, hopefully larger companies will feel the pressure from consumers to do the same," said Dave Dahl, Dragon Pearl's marketing director.
